1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 47
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes
 1-3     pride in recognizing one of its most respected members,
 1-4     the Honorable Eddie Lucio, Jr., on the joyous occasion of
 1-5     his 53rd birthday, January 20, 1999; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Born in Brownsville, Texas, on January 20, 1946,
 1-7     Eddie Lucio began his political career in 1971 when he became the
 1-8     youngest county treasurer ever to be elected in Cameron County;
 1-9     he was later elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1985,
1-10     where he served from 1986 until his election to the Texas Senate in
1-11     1990; and
1-12           WHEREAS, An outstanding legislator and an exemplary gentleman,
1-13     Eddie Lucio has received numerous accolades for his 13 years of
1-14     distinguished public service in the Texas Legislature; and
1-15           WHEREAS, In 1991, he was recognized as the South Texas Tort
1-16     Reformer of the Year by the Texas Civil Justice League; in 1993,
1-17     he received the Government Advocate Award in Region III from the
1-18     United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and was named the
1-19     State Senator of the Year by the Combined Law Enforcement
1-20     Associations of Texas; and
1-21           WHEREAS, He has also been honored for his exceptional
1-22     legislative service by the members of the Texas Public Employees
1-23     Association, who awarded him the Senator John A. Traeger Award for
1-24     Legislator of the Year in 1994; he was the 1996 recipient of the
 2-1     Friend of Family award from the Tip of Texas Family Outreach; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, A resourceful lawmaker who is committed to the
 2-3     welfare of the citizens of Texas, Senator Lucio has been actively
 2-4     involved in the issues of public and higher education pertaining
 2-5     to economic development in the Rio Grande Valley and throughout
 2-6     the state; in the Senate, he has served on the State Affairs,
 2-7     Natural Resources, and Intergovernmental Relations committees; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, He succeeded in the acquisition of funds for the
 2-9     South Texas area as a member of the Senate Finance Committee; he
2-10     has served as vice-chair of the Subcommittee on Agriculture of
2-11     the Natural Resources Committee and as a member of the Economic
2-12     Development Committee; as chair of the Intergovernmental Relations
2-13     Committee in 1997, he focused on assisting cities to provide
2-14     affordable housing and to maintain streets and bridges; and
2-15           WHEREAS, Throughout his legislative career, this able
2-16     statesman has consistently represented his constituencies
2-17     with insight, dedication, and integrity; and
2-18           WHEREAS, Senator Lucio's colleagues in the Senate are
2-19     grateful for the wealth of knowledge he brings to the legislature
2-20     and for his ever-present dignity, charm, graciousness, and warm
2-21     sense of humor; and
2-22           WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas--Pan American
2-23     in Edinburg, Senator Lucio is a successful advertising executive
2-24     who lives in Brownsville; throughout his career he has received the
2-25     love and support of his wife, Minnie, and his children, Lynda and
2-26     Eddie Lucio III; now, therefore, be it
 3-1           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 3-2     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere birthday greetings
 3-3     and best wishes to Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.; and, be it further
 3-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
 3-5     as an expression of esteem from his colleagues in the Senate.
