H.R. No. 784


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Friends and family mourn the passing of Whitt Franklin Johnson, former mayor of West University Place, on February 22, 2005, at the age of 94; and WHEREAS, A native of Childress, Mr. Johnson moved to West University Place in 1947, after serving his country in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II; he distinguished himself in his adopted hometown as city manager for 31 years and later led the city as mayor from 1991 until 1993; among his finest accomplishments was providing city employees with benefits after retirement; moreover, he shared his expertise in retirement matters as a member of the Texas Municipal Retirement System Board of Trustees for 24 years; and WHEREAS, This public-spirited gentleman expressed his devotion to the city of West University Place in numerous ways, serving as board chair of West University United Methodist Church and as a member of the West University Historical Society, Rotary Club, and Masonic Lodge No. 1292; in 1977, the community honored him with the dedication of Whitt Johnson Park for his many years of service; and WHEREAS, Beloved by his family and friends and admired throughout the community, Whitt Johnson was known for his dynamic personality and dedication to helping others, and he will be dearly missed by all those who were touched by his deep commitment to his city; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Whitt Franklin Johnson and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 69 years, Fae Marie McBride Johnson; to his daughters, Kay Ann Bednarski and her husband, Fred, and Judy Embrey; to his grandchildren, Katie Walmsley and her husband, Robert, Freddie Bednarski and his wife, Samantha, Kristina West and her husband, Barry, Elizabeth Massengale and her husband, Jake, and Ty Embrey and Doak Embrey; to his eight great-grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Whitt Franklin Johnson.
