R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The University of Texas Medical Branch has made
  important strides toward conquering the Ebola virus by developing a
  promising vaccine; and
         WHEREAS, Scheduled for human trials in the summer of 2015,
  the vaccine is designed to treat the strain of Ebola that has killed
  more than 10,000 people in West Africa since December 2013; it is a
  modified version of a vaccine developed in the previous decade, and
  it is one of only two being studied in humans; and
         WHEREAS, The medical branch developed the fast-acting,
  single-dose vaccine in an interdisciplinary partnership with
  Profectus BioSciences; researchers conducted nonhuman primate
  testing in the Galveston National Laboratory, the only fully
  operational Biosafety Level 4 laboratory on an academic campus in
  the United States; in April 2015, the results were published in the
  scientific journal Nature; the research is supported by the
  National Institutes of Health and the UTMB Department of
  Microbiology and Immunology; and
         WHEREAS, The findings at UTMB may pave the way for the
  manufacture of a safer, single-dose, high-efficiency vaccine to
  combat Ebola outbreaks, potentially saving an untold number of
  lives; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor The University of Texas Medical Branch for
  its development of a promising Ebola vaccine and extend to all those
  associated with this research sincere best wishes for continued
  success in their important work; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for UTMB as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
  of Representatives.
