A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to assignment by the University Interscholastic League of |
|
|
schools to districts for purposes of competition. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 33, Education Code, is |
|
|
amended by adding Section 33.089 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 33.089. ASSIGNMENT OF SCHOOLS TO DISTRICTS BY |
|
|
UNIVERSITY INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE. (a) Except as provided by |
|
|
Subsection (b), the University Interscholastic League may not |
|
|
assign a school to a district for purposes of competition if |
|
|
placement in that district would require the school to travel more |
|
|
than 100 miles to compete against another school assigned to that |
|
|
district. |
|
|
(b) The University Interscholastic League may assign a |
|
|
school to a district that would otherwise be prohibited under |
|
|
Subsection (a) if: |
|
|
(1) a placement permissible under Subsection (a) in a |
|
|
district in the appropriate conference based on the school's |
|
|
enrollment is not available; and |
|
|
(2) if available, the school declines a placement |
|
|
permissible under Subsection (a) in a district in a conference for |
|
|
schools with greater enrollment. |
|
|
SECTION 2. Section 33.089, Education Code, as added by this |
|
|
Act, applies beginning with the first University Interscholastic |
|
|
League reclassification that occurs on or after the effective date |
|
|
of this Act. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
