HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The State of Texas has traditionally recognized a
1-2 variety of official state symbols as tangible representations of
1-3 the proud spirit and heritage of our state; and
1-4 WHEREAS, The bluebonnet, the pecan tree, and the mockingbird
1-5 are examples of natural specimens that serve to exemplify the great
1-6 diversity of the Texas landscape, while the state dish, chili,
1-7 fittingly represents another aspect of our shared culture as
1-8 Texans; and
1-9 WHEREAS, In keeping with this custom, the designation of the
1-10 Texas Red Grapefruit as the official State Fruit of Texas will
1-11 provide suitable recognition for this outstanding food resource;
1-12 and
1-13 WHEREAS, First discovered by Texas citrus growers in 1929,
1-14 this variety of grapefruit has been carefully nurtured and
1-15 perfected over time and is renowned for its sweetness and rich, red
1-16 interior; and
1-17 WHEREAS, As nutritious as it is palate-pleasing, the Texas
1-18 Red Grapefruit contains no fat or sodium, lowers high levels of
1-19 blood cholesterol, boosts iron absorption, is low in calories, and
1-20 is rich in vitamin C; and
1-21 WHEREAS, This delicious fruit also is a boon to the state
1-22 economy, generating more revenue than any other tree fruit produced
1-23 within our borders; and
1-24 WHEREAS, As distinctive as the proud state from which it
2-1 originates, the Texas Red Grapefruit will serve as a fitting emblem
2-2 for the bounties of nature with which our state is blessed; now,
2-3 therefore, be it
2-4 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
2-5 hereby designate the Texas Red Grapefruit as the official State
2-6 Fruit of Texas.
