         Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule  
         11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Criminal  
         Justice was held on Tuesday, January 16, 2001, in the Senate  
         Chamber at Austin, Texas.

         The chair called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m.  There being  
         a quorum present, the following business was transacted:   
          
         The Committee met to conduct a preliminary review of the  
         findings of the Serious Incident Review issued by the Texas  
         Department of Criminal Justice on January 11, 2001 regarding the  
         Connally Unit escape.  Wayne Scott, Executive Director of TDCJ  
         and Gary Johnson, Director of the Institutional Division of TDCJ  
         gave the committee a  review of the findings.   
          
         Other witnesses testifying are shown on the attached list.  
          
         There being no further business, at 4:25 p.m. Senator Armbrister  
         moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of  
         the chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
